Harlequins began life playing at the new national stadium, built in Twickenham in time for the 1906/07 season, where initially there would only be a handful of international games each year, and it wasn’t long until the Rugby Football Union (RFU) handed the ground over to Harlequins to use it as their own stadium.
By 1963, the club had bought a 14-acre athletics ground within a stones throw from the original ground. This new ground would become the home of Harlequins and was named in memory of former Harlequins and England international Adrian Stoop as the Stoop Memorial Ground. The former ground was to become the club’s official training ground.
The ground changed it’s name to the Twickenham Stoop Stadium in 2005 and has undergone a number of renovations to bring it in line with new regulations and requirements in modern stadia. The renovations started back in 1997 with the Etihad Stand which runs along the length of the East touchline and seats 4,200 spectators with no obstructions. In 2005, the Lexus Stand was opened, running along the West touchline, and features the club shop on the outside and new changing facilities for the players and officials.
The Twickenham Stoop has 39 Executive boxes and 3 lounges (The 1886 Suite, The Jason Leonard Lounge and The Legends Lounge) spread between the Etihad and LV= Stands. Each of the rooms feature Quins memorabilia on the walls, flatscreen televisions and a great rugby atmosphere throughout the day, giving executives and fans that great day out at the rugby.
The ground also plays host to the Harlequins Rugby League side, and famously hosted a rugby league match, and a rugby union fixture, on the same day in 2006. It has also hosted the rugby league varsity fixture between Oxford and Cambridge, as well as the 2010 Women’s Rugby Union World Cup final.
