French Dominate To Hold Off Ireland

France get preparations underway with perfect start

France started their World Cup preparations with a win

France dominated the first half and then held off a spirited Irish fight back to take an important 19-12 victory in their World Cup warm-up match in Bordeaux.

Vincent Clerc collected a lay-off from Alexis Palisson in the 17th minute and sprinted over to give the French the lead, with Dimitri Yachvili adding the conversion, adding a penalty from the touchline shortly after to his 4th minute penalty as the home side took advantage of a lacklustre Irish team, going in 13-3 up at the break with Ronan O’Gara adding three points for the Irish.

Ireland came back after half time as a different team, with O’Gara adding three penalties as they got within one point of the home side. O’Gara could have put Ireland ahead but missed his next attempt and Yachvili was able to capitalise as Ireland started to concede more and more penalties as they pushed for victory, adding two more penalties to secure the win.

The two will meet again at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin this weekend where Ireland will need to be more disciplined and take advantage of the chances they get if they’re to be serious contenders in New Zealand later this year.
