Storming Start To New Season

Points galore on the opening weekend of the season

Posted Sep 06, 2011 by Chris White

The new season got underway with some outstanding matches

Wow. If the rest of the Premiership season is half as good as the opening weekend, we’re set to have one of the most exciting of all time. With 256 points scored across the six matches – averaging out at 42 points in each game – it shows that English rugby’s top-flight has not been depleted of its quality despite the top names being away on international duty.

The World Cup gets under way this Friday, but the Premiership may force it into the background if weekends like this one continue. Champions Saracens got off to a nightmare start as they look to retain the title they won at Twickenham in May. Wasps were the victors at Vicarage Road, 20-15.

Worcester got off to a good start in the top division following their promotion from the Championship, beating Sale 17-12 with Miles Benjamin crossing for the only try of the game.

Bath made a good start to their 2011/12 season, winning 22-9 away at Newcastle with Sam Vesty scoring 17 points.

Harlequins edged out London Irish 29-24 at the Madejski Stadium, but it was Exeter who pulled off the shock result of the opening weekend. The Chiefs won 30-28 away at last year’s runners-up Leicester. Sireli Naqelevuki, Tom Johnson and Matt Jess all made it across the whitewash to shade a narrow encounter.

It was another tight affair at Franklin’s Gardens as Northampton held off Gloucester to win 26-24.

The World Cup may be starting this week, but there will be plenty of coverage of the domestic game here at Imagine Rugby so keep checking back for the latest updates and opinions.
