World Cup Squads - Ireland & Wales

Final 30 players for the World Cup announced

Posted Aug 25, 2011 by Chris White

Ireland have a favourable draw for the group stage

Conor Murray earned himself a place in the Irish squad for the World Cup, along with full-back Geordan Murphy after Felix Jones and Tomas O’Leary were left out through injury and performances respectively.

Murray only made his debut for Ireland two weeks ago in the warm-up match in Bordeaux, but travels as one of three scrum halves in the squad. Luke Fitzgerald, a member of the last British and Irish Lions squad, who would have been considered as a first choice selection for the team let alone the squad, fails to make the trip this autumn.

Tommy Bowe travels to the southern hemisphere despite not featuring in the past month, while Andrew Trimble will make the trip after impressing over the summer.

22-year old Sam Warburton will become the youngest man to captain Wales at a World Cup when he does so this autumn, having been named as the skipper by coach Warren Gatland.

Prop Gethin Jenkins is included in the final squad despite not having played since January due to toe and calf problems Jenkins underwent surgery in January but Gatland felt that, despite it him being a risk, he is such an important player to the side that he will be able to do a job at some stage in the competition, potentially even in the first game against South Africa. Stephen Jones is also included despite not featuring in any of the three warm-up matches.

There is no place in the squad for Dwayne Peel, Richard Hibbard, injured trio Morgan Stoddart, Gavin Henson or Matthew Rees, or Martyn Williams – who won his 99th cap for his country in the 28-13 win against Argentina in Cardiff.

Scott Andrews, Jonathan Thomas, Justin Tipuric, Josh Turnbull and Gareth Delve failed to make the final 30 after being part of the preliminary squad.
