It’s the moment Welsh rugby fans have all been waiting for – Gavin Henson is set to make his long awaited return to action on Boxing Day. The talented centre has been out of action for about 21-months after he took unpaid leave from Ospreys following the break-up of his relationship with entertainer Charlotte Church.
He was desperate for a move from Wales to re-focus his career and his life and recently Saracens stepped in to take him on, giving him a chance to play in the elite league of English rugby union.
It was considered by some to be a risk, taking on a player who hasn’t been on the field of play for so long, but many others saw it as a fine signing by Saracens and I believe it could prove to be a stroke of genius they battle it out at the top end of the Aviva Premiership.
Currently sitting third with seven wins from 10 matches, the Sarries play London rivals Wasps at Wembley on Sunday – a match that will undoubtedly be one of the best of the weekend’s fixtures.
And if Henson does make his comeback in some capacity then you can be sure it will be the fixture that will dominate all the headlines.
It is expected that the 28-year-old will start on the bench and he is happy to accept this. He is also keen to return at number 12, his favoured position, despite saying previously that he wants to move to fly-half when he returns.
I think 12 is where he will be strongest and where he will have most impact for his new club but it will be a massive test the first time he plays. You can guarantee that everyone will be gunning for him and that he will be welcomed back to the professional game in no uncertain terms.
All in all, it will be fascinating to see how he gets on this weekend and should he make it on to the field of play, it may well be written in the stars for him to go out there and play a defining role in the result.
