Rugby Union is bucking the trend of sponsorship in sport as this week Scottish Rugby announced it had secured what is believed to be a seven-figure deal with the Royal Bank of Scotland.Described as the most significant investment yet in its game, the deal will range from sponsorship of the national team’s shirts after the Six Nations to a rebranding of the domestic leagues.SRU chief executive Gordon McKie said: “Attracting such a high-profile brand is testimony to the hard work undertaken.”The deal is to last three-and-a-half years and encompasses the game from grassroots to senior level, putting the foundations in place for future generations.I believe this deal has a lot to do with the performances of the national team over recent months. RBS have obviously recognised how well the team are doing and how much they have improved under Andy Robinson, culminating with the recent wins over South Africa and Samoa. All the ingredients for a positive Scottish Rugby future are there and this news will be seen as the icing on the cake for them. And the most positive part is that grassroots rugby will be boosted by this. It’s great that the SRU have recognised that the lowest levels and the youngest ages require this money to ensure a great future for the nation.Too often, governing bodies ignore the man at the bottom of the pile and concentrate on the elite players only. It’s refreshing that grassroots sport will benefit from this funding and the SRU deserve massive praise for planning as they are.Further good news also wasn’t too far away for the Scots. Scottish Rugby also announces that the Murray Group have extended their sponsorship of the national team. The deal will now run out on March 31st 2011. Scottish Rugby is really blossoming at the minute and they could be a fantastic outside bet to win the Six Nations at the start of next year.
