Reigning Aviva Premiership champions, Leicester Tigers, have endured a difficult and miserable start to the current campaign and their failure to set the league alight is testament to the improvement the other clubs have made.
But we can be sure of one thing, a team that consists of the likes of Toby Flood, Geordan Murphy, Tom Croft and George Chuter will not be struggling for too long. There is so much quality in the Tigers’ line-up that it is impossible to think they won’t improve. In fact it’s ludicrous.
They may have lost three of their five games to date but they showed massive strides forward with a crushing 46-10 win over Scarlets on Sunday in the Heineken Cup. This follows a close 34-29 win at Benetton Treviso last weekend.
If they can transfer this form from the Heineken Cup over to the Premiership then they should rapidly climb the table. In fact, what better way to start than at Welford Road against Bath on Saturday? If they can beat a team who is looking to challenge for honours this season and beat them comfortably, then this will no doubt spur them on to a run of form.
In fact, I very much anticipate that they will beat Bath, follow that up with a win at Gloucester before easing past Harelquins and Newcastle.
Then it’s the big one, away at London Irish on the first Saturday of December.
Tigers will need all the form they can muster for this match as I fully expect the Irish to be challenging towards the business end of the season.
This run of games will no doubt shape the Tigers’ season and I fully expect them to come out the other side in a strong position with some great results under their belts.
As I expect the Tigers to come on strongly, I think they will mount a serious title challenge this season but I think runners-up is the best they can hope for. I believe Leicester Tigers will finish second.
