Northampton will be the team to beat

We have recently taken a look at the chances of success for London Irish, and now we focus on last year’s runners-up and the team currently operating second spot in the Aviva Premiership, Northampton Saints.
The Saints finished last season just two points behind eventual champions and bitter rivals Leicester Tigers and they will be hoping to go one further this time around.
They are currently two points off Irish having scored less bonus points but they look a formidable outfit again this season and with the likes of Chris Ashton, Shane Geraghty, Bruce Reihana and Soane Tonga’uiha all scoring freely, it could be a season on success for the Saints.
I like their style of play and I honestly believe that to win the league, you will have to finish above the Saints. I think they are that strong.
They have won four of their opening five league matches to date defeating the Tigers on the opening day and then following that up with a win at Harlequins, then triumphs at Franklin Gardens against Bath and Exeter. They have also won their opening Heineken Cup game against Castres and travel to Edinburgh today in that competition.
Their next five games in the Aviva Premiership will give us more of a clue as to whether they have the ability and confidence to kick on in the league. Next weekend they travel to Wasps before entertaining Newcastle. They then travel to Sale and then it’s the big ‘un against Irish at Franklin Gardens before a trip to bottom club Leeds Carnegie.
Aside from the Irish game, I expect Northampton to ease past the others who occupy four of the bottom five positions. I expect a full house for the Saints and this will in turn give them a cushion at the top of the table to then really kick on ahead of all of their rivals.
For me, Northampton will be champions this season.
