Rugby’s Aviva Premiership is turning out to be one of the most exciting, unpredictable sporting leagues in the world and predicting who will be in contention for the title come the end of the season would be foolish. Wouldn’t it?
Well that’s exactly what I’m about to do! Yes, yes, I’m foolish I know. But this season has got me really excited. With everyone being beaten – and sometimes by teams I’d expect them to walk past – I just couldn’t resist having a pop at predicting the winner.
So here goes!
I believe it will be between three teams when the final whistle is blown for the season. I reckon that reigning champions Leicester Tigers, their bitter rivals Northampton Saints and current table-toppers London Irish will be the three who are vying to lift the trophy. And Bath may sneak in, but I think it may be out of reach for them this season.
So let’s look at reigning champions Leicester. After four matches they sit fifth having won two and lost two. But they have easily scored the most points have registered 134 so far. It is this attacking prowess that makes me sure they will be there or there abouts at the end of the campaign. However, they will have to learn to defend better if they are to retain their title. They have shipped 97 in four games and you will struggle to consistently win if you are conceding nearly 25 points every match.
Their fierce rivals, Northampton, were quick out of the blocks with three wins in their first three matches but Sunday’s defeat to Saracens has knocked them off their perch. However, they have added to their squad sensibly and seem a strong team this season. They need to score more points and their attacking players will really need to stand up and be counted if they want to be in with a shout of the title.
And then there’s London Irish. They have been quietly going about their business so far this season, winning three of their first four games. They score freely and don’t concede heavily. The biggest test they will have to overcome is taking points off their title rivals and if they can do this then they will definitely stand a good chance.
I reckon it could be London Irish’s season and I’m going to stick my neck out and tip them for the title. C’mon you Irish!
