Wow! That about sums up England’s superb display against the Australians at Twickenham last weekend. They were superb. They were scintillating. They were devastating. They humbled a Wallabies team in fine form and they did it in style and with panache. And how often can you say that about any English national sporting team?In a week where the footballers have once again been found out and in a week where the cricketers produce some hit and miss performances, it was never expected that Martin Johnson’s team would go out onto the hallowed turf of Twickers and destroy one of the best and most dangerous nations in world rugby. From back to front the English were superb but a special mention must go to the explosive and thoroughly brilliant Chris Ashton who scored a try in each half and frightened the Aussie backs all afternoon. His second score will go down as one of the greatest at the fabulous, historic venue. It was that good. It’s not often you’ll see a stunning 90m sprint from one end of the field to the other against a team as skilled and as drilled as the Wallabies but that’s exactly what he did.And his blistering performance was backed up with brilliant kicking by Toby Flood, whose 25 points – a record against the Australians for an Englishman – showed he has the calibre to follow in the huge footsteps of Jonny Wilkinson. Flood kicked seven penalties and two conversions. This was by far England’s best performance under Johnson but the big test will come this weekend when they face a lesser team in Samoa. The question is, can England repeat a performance at this level and follow at 35-18 win over the Aussies with an equally outstanding performance and scoreline against the Samoans?
