The Heineken Cup returns this weekend with the Quarter Final stages with the two remaining English and Irish sides hoping to reach the final at the Millennium Stadium on 21st May.
The first game on Saturday sees Perpignan take on Toulon at the Estadi Olimpic in Barcelona. Perpignan finished on top of Group 5 losing just one game, and defeated Scarlets 37-5 in their last match in the competition. Toulon finished on top of Group 4 and lost two matches including their last fixture against Ospreys, 29-17. The fixture will be the first between the sides in the competition and will see Perpignan’s top points scorer Jerome Porical up against Jonny Wilkinson.
The second fixture on Saturday is possibly the standout fixture of the round with Leinster taking on Leicester Tigers at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. History suggests that this match will be extremely close with ten games between the sides, and five victories apiece, with Leicester edging the points totals 221-188. This season Leinster are averaging 25 points a game, with Tigers averaging 28 so this could be a cracker, with a rematch from the final six nations game between fly halves Johnny Sexton and Toby Flood.
Sunday sees Northampton Saints taking on Ulster at Stadium:mk. This season’s statistics again show that this could be a very tight affair with Saints just edging the average points 23-21. Saints are unbeaten in this year’s competition and have won their last three Premiership fixtures and will be looking to extend this run, but Ulster are unbeaten in their last six Magners League fixtures.
The final quarter final takes place at the Estadio Anoeta between Biarritz and Toulouse. The visitors have won both of the previous meetings between the sides in the Heineken Cup and are averaging slightly more points this season than their opponents, 29-25.
