Losing two players in the run-up to a season’s conclusion is never a good thing when it happens through injury, but Wasps are in a position now where they will have to decide whether to weaken their own side simply because two of their players apparently ended up as part of a brawl with football supporters in a London pub last Monday.
Tim Payne and Andy Powell - both international forwards for England and Wales respectively – were due to go up before the Wasps disciplinary committee before the end of the week following the incident, which involved Derby captain Robbie Savage. The pair had been watching a game between Derby and QPR, when they were involved in an altercation with various QPR fans in a pub near Loftus Road.
It is not the first time that Powell has been involved in controversy. Last year he was thrown out of the Wales squad for stealing a golf buggy and driving down the M6 to a service station, and subsequently being charged for drunk driving. Payne, a prop in the England elite squad has not previously generated the same amount of incidents as Powell, but will not necessarily expect any leniency to be shown by the club, who have stated that they will make no further announcements on the issue until the hearing has been completed.
This is the latest in a long line of controversies for the Welsh coach Warren Gatland, who has also seen Gavin Henson, Bradley Davies and Jamie Roberts all been involved in violent altercations within the last couple of months. It is a problem that Gatland needs to do more to avoid.
