NEWCASTLE, Australia(AP) Australia will host Scotland in a one-off test in the city of Newcastle next year as part of a return to major midyear international fixtures.
The Australian Rugby Union said Friday it will return to hosting traditional June tests starting with Scotland on June 5 and followed by three matches against Wales on June 9, 16 and 23.
The Newcastle match will be Australia's first against Scotland since the Wallabies' 9-8 loss at Murrayfield in 2009. It will also be Australia's first ever test at Newcastle, about 170 kilometers (100 miles) north of Sydney.
"Newcastle and the Hunter region has a wonderful history as a nursery for Wallabies stars, the most recent of them being Luke Burgess,'' ARU chief John O'Neill said in a statement. "So to take a Test to the area is a fitting reward for the contribution Newcastle and the Hunter have made over a long period of time.''
Scotland's match against Australia will highlight its Pacific tour, which also includes tests against Fiji and Samoa.
"We're really pleased to have this fixture as part of our tour in June,'' Scotland coach Andy Robinson said in an ARU statement. "The last time we played against Australia was a very good game and a special win for Scotland.''
The Wales matches will be the first time since the 2001 British and Irish Lions tour that Australia has hosted a three-test tour by a Northern Hemisphere team.
