Rocky Elsom to captain Waratahs in Super 15

Updated: January 30, 2012, 21:31

SYDNEY(AP) Wallabies backrower Rocky Elsom has been appointed captain of the New South Wales Waratahs for the coming Super 15 rugby season, taking over from the retired Phil Waugh.

The 27-year-old former Wallabies captain has returned to the Waratahs after spending two seasons with the ACT Brumbies. He will resume the Waratahs captaincy role he last held in 2007.

Waratahs coach Michael Foley considered a number of candidates including internationals Dan Vickerman and Berrick Barnes before choosing Elsom as captain. The powerful flanker captained Australia for three years until James Horwill was appointed in his place for last year's World Cup.

Elsom's fellow Wallabies flanker David Pocock was named on Monday as captain of the Western Force.
