England calls NZ-born Waldrom into RWC squad

Updated: September 25, 2011, 04:52

AUCKLAND, New Zealand(AP) England has confirmed New Zealand-born No. 8 Thomas Waldrom will come into its Rugby World Cup squad as replacement for injured prop Andrew Sheridan.

The uncapped Waldrom has been in New Zealand for a week as unofficial cover for Nick Easter and manager Martin Johnson has opted to strengthen his backrow rather than restore a fifth prop to the squad.

The 28-year-old Waldrom was in a 45-man pre-tournament training squad but failed to make August's warmups because of a calf injury.

England has been down to 29 men since Sheridan withdrew after damaging his left shoulder in the opening win over Argentina two weeks ago.
