England manager Johnson quits after woweful WCup

Updated: November 16, 2011, 11:03

LONDON(AP) Martin Johnson has confirmed he is resigning as England manager in the wake of a shambolic Rugby World Cup campaign that was overshadowed by indiscretions on and off the pitch.

A series of lurid headlines followed England around New Zealand before a limp quarterfinal exit against France in October.

Three separates reviews were launched by the Rugby Football Union into the World Cup campaign, but Johnson decided to quit on Wednesday before their findings were published.

Johnson told a media conference at Twickenham that "I think it's in the best interests of myself and England team that I don't carry on into next year.''

He said he doesn't want to renew his contract, which was due to expire in December after more than three years in charge.
