Dual-code Wales international Gareth Thomas quits

Updated: October 25, 2011, 07:25

LONDON(AP) Wales dual-code rugby international Gareth Thomas has retired aged 37.

The first player to make 100 appearances for Wales' national rugby union side, Thomas has been playing rugby league for the past 18 months and scored three tries in four tests.

He had looked set to appear in the Four Nations tournament against Australia, New Zealand and England but he broke his left arm in July and his club side - Crusaders - folded because of financial problems.

Thomas says that "the challenge of something different excites me more than another year of rugby.''

Thomas attracted widespread media attention in 2009 when he publicly announced that he was gay, earning praise within the sport for his honesty.
