Matfield nominated for SAfrican player of the year

Updated: October 22, 2011, 09:40

JOHANNESBURG(AP) Victor Matfield was nominated for South Africa's player of the year on Saturday, giving the recently retired 110-test Springboks great a chance at an emotional farewell, having never won in five previous nominations.

Matfield was in the running for a sixth time after he retired following South Africa's quarterfinal exit at the World Cup in New Zealand.

Matfield was nominated in 2001, 2005-07 and '09 but, despite being one of the leading locks in world rugby for 10 years, has missed out on player of the year at home.

Fellow internationals Schalk Burger, Bismarck du Plessis, Francois Hougaard and Pat Lambie made up the five 2011 nominees, which were voted for by members of South Africa's rugby media.

The winner will be announced on Nov. 3.
