International interest in Fiji coaching job

Updated: December 21, 2011, 19:14

WELLINGTON, New Zealand(AP) The Fiji Rugby Union says there has been considerable overseas interest in the vacant role of head coach of its national team.

Chief executive Manasa Baravilala said the FRU had received applications from Australia, New Zealand, Wales, Scotland and England for the role, left open by the sacking of Sam Domoni after the Rugby World Cup.

Manasa said a number of Fiji-based coaches had also applied for the role, which will incorporate the position of National Coaching Director. Applications close on Tuesday and the successful applicant will hold the job through the 2015 World Cup.

Fiji was the first nation to sack its coach after October's World Cup, dismissing Domoni along with most of the team's assistant and technical coaches.
