Owens to ref NZ-Argentina quarter in World Cup

Updated: October 03, 2011, 02:29

AUCKLAND, New Zealand(AP) Nigel Owens, criticized by both sides for his handling of the South Africa-Samoa pool match last week, has been appointed to referee the New Zealand-Argentina quarterfinal in the Rugby World Cup on Sunday.

Owens' calls were described as stupid and harsh by Samoa and strange by the Springboks, who won the bruising encounter 13-5. Each team had a man carded. Welshman Owens said it was the hardest game he's ever refereed, and had no regrets.

The other quarterfinal appointments were:

Craig Joubert, South Africa-Wales vs. Ireland, Saturday

Steve Walsh, Australia-England vs. France, Saturday

Bryce Lawrence, New Zealand-South Africa vs. Australia, Sunday

The refs for the semifinals will be announced on Oct. 10
