Rees to miss Wales-Ireland because of calf strain

Updated: February 01, 2012, 08:57

CARDIFF, Wales(AP) Hooker Matthew Rees has strained a calf muscle and won't be available for Wales' opening Six Nations match against Ireland on Sunday in Dublin.

The Welsh Rugby Union said on Wednesday that Rees could be out for two weeks, which could also rule him out of next week's home match against Scotland.

The absence of Rees, the captain in last year's Six Nations, offers the likelihood of a start for World Cup hooker Huw Bennett, who would receive his 50th cap.

Ken Owens, who made his test debut in the World Cup in New Zealand, is expected to make the reserves in the team to be named on Friday.
