Scrappy France beats Canada 46-19 at World Cup

Updated: September 18, 2011, 06:23

NAPIER, New Zealand(AP) France relied on late tries from winger Vincent Clerc and fullback Damien Traille to get the better of a resilient Canada 46-19 at the Rugby World Cup on Sunday.

France looked shaky and led by only six points until Traille surged over under the posts for a converted try in the 64th minute that took the pressure off coach Marc Lievremont's despondent team at a rain-sodden McLean Park.

Clerc then went over twice in the dying minutes for his third and and fourth tries of the tournament and ninth overall - a French record. The bonus-point win was far less comfortable than the final scoreline suggests, just as it had been last week against Japan.
