Rob Simmons re-signs with Reds, Australia

Updated: January 19, 2012, 21:22

BRISBANE, Australia(AP) Queensland Reds and Wallabies lock Rob Simmons has signed a new two-year deal with the Australian Rugby Union, becoming the most recent of 23 leading players to re-sign.

The 22-year-old Simmons was off contract at the end of 2011 and delayed his signing until this month after 22 of his Wallabies teammates re-committed to Australian rugby last year.

Simmons has won 16 caps, appearing in 10 of Australia's 13 tests last season, including six of its seven World Cup matches.

His signing will aid continuity for the national team, which won the Tri-Nations tournament in 2011 for the first time in 10 years.

Coach Robbie Deans said Simmons "has a big future and is working hard towards that so it's pleasing he sees his future playing in Australia.''
