WELLINGTON, New Zealand(AP) Former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga has been appointed head coach of New Zealand's Counties-Manukau province.
The 38-year-old Umaga, who captained New Zealand in 21 of his 74 tests, gained coaching experience while with the French club Toulon and was a player and assistant-coach with Counties last season.
He takes over from Milton Haig who, with fellow New Zealander Chris Gibbes, has been appointed co-coach of the Georgia national team.
Umaga said "this is a region full of talent and I am looking forward to capturing that talent, enhancing and retaining it, while building on the good work with the players that we have already done.''
